While I do like how the Batmobile controls in вЂњBattle ModeвЂќ where you can strafe around to use your guns, the actual вЂњminigameвЂќ of tank/car combat is really clunky, especially when you compare it to the fluidity of BatmanвЂ™s hand-to-hand combat that Arkham is known for. Generally speaking, IвЂ™m not all that thrilled about car combat in Arkham Knight. TheyвЂ™re really creative, really diverse, and IвЂ™m sorry I ever made fun of the Riddler for making them. My latest challenge had me launch out of my car at high speed and perfect my aerial gliding to hit switches.

With the help of a wench that can do everything from pulling apart walls to access new areas, to ripping up metal to create ramps, to powering buildings and uploading viruses, youвЂ™ll constantly be turning to your car to advance in missions. And when you inevitably smash into them? Your car is covered in tasers which shocks bad guys into unconsciousness (even if youвЂ™re traveling 150 mph). The enemy tanks you fight are all unmanned drones, and when you turn your guns onto humans, you start shooting rubber bullets or beanbags instead it seems. I also think itвЂ™s a little bit hilarious that a tank outfitted with a machine gun and a shell-shooting turret bends over backwards to be вЂњnon-lethalвЂќ in keeping with DC hero-philosophy. Most other driving games have hard limits on what you can crash through, but not the Batmobile. You can plow through fences, walls, statues, support pillars, practically anything outside of a literal skyscraper standing in your way. ItвЂ™s practically impossible to get stuck on any of the scenery with it. Like NolanвЂ™s Batmobile, the Arkham version is also a tank. Sometimes, itвЂ™s a blast, but in other sequences, itвЂ™s a chore and feels weirdly out of the tone with the traditions of the game.Д«ut itвЂ™s not just that you can use it to get around, itвЂ™s how you can use it. Everything from navigation to quest structure is based around the new Batmobile, and itвЂ™s far and away the most curious aspect of the game.
